Causes of Blackheads

Blackheads, or open comedones, are a build up of excess oil, dirt, makeup, and pollution that finds their way into pores. They’re different from whiteheads, or closed comedones, because most of them don’t have skin sealing the gunk inside.

But, good news!, this actually makes blackhead removal pretty simple.

How to Get Rid of Blackheads

All that gunk is just begging to escape from those open pores. This can be done in a few different ways.

  • Blackhead vacuum
  • Blackhead extractor tool
  • Manual extraction, with your fingers or Q-tips
  • Skin care products, including these lovely DIY masks you can make at home

5 Best Organic DIY Blackhead Masks

Blackhead-busting active ingredients like glycolic acid, vitamin C, antioxidants, and polyphenols are also in the foods we eat and drinks we drink. These 5 masks are made with combinations of either brown sugar, black tea, green tea, baking soda, honey, yogurt, tea tree oil, or lemon juice.

For best results, apply to skin that’s just been double cleansed, exfoliated, and steamed. This makes pores soft and blackheads easier to remove.

  1. Brown Sugar and Organic Black Tea Mask

Brown sugar, or any raw sugar, is a natural source of the powerful AHA glycolic acid. Glycolic acid can penetrate deep into pores to clear out the dirt and debris and also exfoliates to slough off pore-clogging dead skin cells. Black tea is packed with polyphenols, which is an antioxidant, plus thearubigins and theaflavins, which are a natural astringent.

Ingredients

¼ to ½ cup Brown Sugar

1 mug Organic Black Tea (either loose or 1 tea bag)

Instructions

Brew a mug of black tea with boiling water. Let it steep for at least 5 minutes. We like to let it cool completely with the tea bag in the mug, about 20 minutes. In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup brown sugar and slowly add black tea until the mixture is moist enough to apply to your face without dripping off. If you’ve added too much tea, just mix in more brown sugar or vice versa. The consistency should look like damp, but not super wet, sand. Apply to face and leave on for 15 minutes, then use small circular motions to gently exfoliate as you rinse off with warm water. Repeat daily until blackheads are gone. The remainder can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

  1. Raw Sugar and Organic Green Tea Mask

Raw sugar is a natural AHA which is a small molecule that can penetrate deep into pores. Green tea is rich in polyphenols which have been shown to prevent oil glands from excess oil production.

Ingredients

¼ to ½ cup Sugar in the Raw, or similar brand

Organic Green Tea (either loose or 1 tea bag)

Instructions

Brew a mug of green tea. The trick to making green tea properly is to bring water to a near-boil, instead of boiling, then pour water into the mug and follow with tea. If the water is too hot, green tea ends up smelling (and tasting) fishy.

Let steep at least 5 minutes, or until water has completely cooled, about 15 minutes. In a small bowl, add ¼ cup sugar and slowly add in green tea until the mixture is thick enough to stay on your face without dripping off. Apply and leave on for 15 minutes, then use small circular motions to gently exfoliate as you rinse off with warm water. Repeat daily, as needed. The remainder can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

  1. Baking Soda Mask

Baking soda can work wonders in clearing out pores. It is a natural exfoliator and soothes irritated skin. To avoid overdrying skin, this mask should only be applied where blackheads are. For most people, it’s the T-zone.

Ingredients

About 2 teaspoons baking soda, organic if you can find it

Filtered warm water

Instructions

In a small bowl, add baking soda and slowly pour in warm filtered water until the mixture is thin enough to spread over blackheads but thick enough to stay on without dripping. Only apply this mask to where blackheads are. Leave on for 10-15 minutes and rinse with warm water. Repeat every other day, as needed, as long as skin is not overdry.

  1. Organic Lemon Juice and Honey Mask

Lemon juice is very acidic which makes it a potent astringent and great for drying out all types of acne. It is also packed with vitamin C which is great for helping skin cells fight acne and as a skin brightener. Honey is a natural antiseptic and anti-inflammatory.

Ingredients

2 teaspoons organic lemon juice

3-4 Tablespoons raw local honey

Instructions

In a small bowl, add lemon juice then slowly drizzle in honey until mixture can be spread over blackheads without dripping off. Leave on for 15 minutes then rinse with warm water. Repeat every other day, as needed, as long as your skin is not irritated by the lemon juice.

  1. Tea Tree Oil, Brown Sugar, Organic Yogurt

Tea tree oil has antiseptic and antibacterial properties. Brown sugar has naturally occurring glycolic acid plus it doubles as an exfoliator. Yogurt has probiotics to help skin rebuild it’s naturally defenses to all types of acne.

Ingredients

15 drops Tea Tree Oil

2 Tbsp Brown Sugar

1-2 Tbsp Plain Organic Yogurt, room temperature

Instructions

In a small bowl, add Tea Tree Oil and Brown sugar and 1 Tbsp Yogurt. If the mask is too thick, add another Tbsp of yogurt until it’s thin enough to spread on your face but thick enough to not drip. Leave on for 15 minutes then rinse with warm water. Repeat every other day, as needed.
